Two sitcoms, eleven years apart.
Friends tackled everyday activities from today to tomorrow.
The sitcom aired from 1994 to 2004 with a total of ten glorious seasons.
The series is about a group of six in a time in their life where friends are their family; how they struggle with their comedic romantic adventures and career issues; and how they support one another like a family. This group of six is comprised of: Chandler (Matthew Perry), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Ross (David Schwimmer), Monica (Courteney Cox), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow).
How I Met Your Mother started from yesterday to today.
The sitcom aired from 2005 to 2014 with nine legendary seasons.
The series is about Ted (Josh Radnor) telling his kids how he met their mother and telling other stuff as well, like: life as an architect in New York, his relationship with Robin (Cobie Smulders), legendary Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) stories, romantic tales about Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), and many more.
Viewers of both shows say that these two shows are very similar. Some even say that H.I.M.Y.M. just copied the dynamics of the Friends show.
I’d have to say that there are similar aspects like:
The group dynamic
The pilot episode
Both pilot episodes start off with something related to marriage.
Ross with his divorce, and Marshall proposing to Lily.
Similarities between Ross and Ted (SPOILERS ALERT!!!)
Both were professors
Both dated a student (which ended badly)
Both are whiny, geeky, and huge fans of Indiana Jones (Who isn’t?)
THE BIGGEST SPOILER ALERT!!!
Both show their feelings for the hot girl in the first episode
After a year or so, they eventually get together
But breaks up after a year or so
They both get the girl at the last episode ❤
Similarity between some of their story line
The funny one falls in love with miss-always-right
Guests who are… *ahum* close to them at the time
Brad Pitt when he and Jennifer Aniston were still married
David Arquette when he and Courteney Cox were still dating
Tate Donovan when he and Jennifer Aniston were still dating
Alexis Denisof which is the husband of Alyson Hannigan
Lindsay Price which Josh Radnor dated at the time
Taran Killam, Cobie Smulder’s husband
David Burtka, Neil Patrick Harris’ husband
And here’s a little extra for you guys… they used the same extras and guests!
Anne Dudek has appeared on Friends as someone who is broken up during her birthday… guess what?
Same thing happened to her at H.I.M.Y.M. when she was dumped by Ted.
Jamie Kaler appeared on Friends as someone offered by Chandler to date Rachel.
On H.I.M.Y.M., he likes the same girl that Ted liked for 12 years.
Meanwhile in H.I.M.Y.M., she’s Lily’s grandmother.
Maybe Lily, Monica, and Ross are related? lol
Maggie Wheeler is the on-and-off love interest of Chandler Bing in Friends.
On H.I.M.Y.M. she only appeared as a Realtor for Marshall and Lily.
Doug Benson on Friends is weird dude that is set-up with Rachel by the guy she likes.
Weirdly, on H.I.M.Y.M. he’s also a weirdo who lets Marshall go back to US from Amsterdam without checking his bag which could have MARI-nated sub!
Phill Lewis, the boss of Chandler at an advertising agency.
On H.I.M.Y.M., he’s the guy who approves or turns down mortgages.
Cristine Rose is Mike Hannigan’s mother on the show. (Don’t know who Mike is? Watch the sitcom!)
Meanwhile on H.I.M.Y.M., she’s Ted’s mom.
Brothers? Same mother, different fathers? No?
Dan Castellaneta plays a janitor at the zoo in Friends, who tells Ross where his monkey really is (No pun intended)
On H.I.M.Y.M., he plays a garbageman who got Marshall’s chart for work.
Eva Amurri plays an actress on the show (Actress-ception) with her mother (Also her mother in real life) Susan Sarandon which Joey replaces.
She plays a chick that Barney plays with at H.I.M.Y.M. that’s really meant for Ted. Ouch.
Richard Gant plays the doctor of Ross set to remove his third nipple on his butt. Waht?
On H.I.M.Y.M., he plays the judge Lily and Marshal tried to get to officiate their wedding.
Michael Kagan is the producer of Days of Our Lives which Joey stars/starred in.
He’s the boss of the Network where Robin works as a news anchor on H.I.M.Y.M.
Jane Carr plays a front-desk woman that Rachel talked to for her to go “somewhere” to do “something”.
On H.I.M.Y.M., she’s a lovely babysitter that Marshall and Lily hired for their baby (And no, I won’t tell you the gender)
Monique Edwards plays a colleague of Chandler at his job doing data analysis.
On H.I.M.Y.M., she plays an assistant director of Robin’s news network.
Suzanne Ford on Friends, plays a producer who likes Joey (Not for his acting skills but physically)
On H.I.M.Y.M., she’s a veterinarian who puts sense into Robin pertaining to Ted’s feelings.
Don’t know if this counts but…
On Friends, Monica’s colleague is Wendy whose profession is a waitress… Well, coincidentally on H.I.M.Y.M., the waitress at MacLaren’s Pub name?
How about you reader?
